This is a map produced for Rijkswaterstaat (a Dutch governmental body tasked with maintaining the national infrastructure, including roads). The main purpose of this map is not navigation, but rather assisting the maintenance and control of these roads. This has had some effects on the content and design of the map.

The source data for this map is supplied by Rijkswaterstaat and includes not only their own, highly detailed, road data, but also topographic data by the Topografische Dienst / Kadaster for the "background". All data processing is done in FME, after which MAPublisher is used to add styles to it. The production of this map has been a joint effort between Red Geographics and Reijers Kaartproducties.

Thanks to FME, several parts of the production of this map could be automated, one notable example being the 5-kilometer markers. First they were selected from a larger collection (1 marker every 100m), then a rotation angle was calculated so that the symbol, which was placed in MAPublisher, could automatically be rotated to a default angle of 90 degrees off the road at that point. Many of the markers could then simply be left at this default rotation, only a small percentage had to be manually adjusted to better fit in with the other map elements.
